Step 3: Using a foot pedal

For hands free playing a foot pedal is a great accessory. You can scroll and turn pages without having to take your hands off the instrument.

If you don't want to use a foot pedal and don't plan to do so, you can skip this section of the tutorial. There is also an option to set up automatic scrolling in Five Lines which allows you to play hands-free without a foot pedal. This will be covered in the next tutorial.

All foot pedals that function as a programmable keyboard, and can be paired via Bluetooth, are compatible with Five Lines.

If you are planning to buy a foot pedal and are not sure whether it will work with Five Lines, send us a short email to support@five-lines.com and we will check it for you.

Coupling the foot pedal

For precise instructions on how to couple your foot pedal with Five Lines, please refer to the manufacturer's documentation.

In most cases, however, you will have to follow the following steps:

  1. Make sure that Bluetooth is enabled on your device.
  2. Put your foot pedal into pairing mode. This usually involves holding down a specific button or combination of buttons. Refer to your foot pedal's manual for exact instructions.
  3. Open the Bluetooth settings on your device and look for the foot pedal in the list of available devices.
  4. Select the foot pedal to pair it with your device.
  5. If you have paired your foot pedal once, your device will remember it for future use, and you don't have to carry out these steps again. Just switching the foot pedal on should automatically connect it to your device.

Please note: Some devices switch to a different display mode when a keyboard is connected. This may lead to unwanted behavior of the Five Lines app. If you experience any issues, go to your Android settings and look for one of the following settings, and disable them:

Testing the foot pedal

After successfully pairing your foot pedal with your device, you can test its functionality in the settings Settings icon on the start page of the app.

Here you can also define which specific keys you want to use to turn the pages. In most cases the default settings are sufficient.

Using the foot pedal

Once your foot pedal is set up and tested, you can use it to control page turns while playing. Pressing the left or right pedal will turn the pages, just like the on-screen buttons, described in step 1. Since you don't need to use the on-screen buttons anymore, you can hide them by tapping on Eye icon in the lower toolbar.

Next steps

Even with manual page turning, you can enhance your experience by exploring additional features in the app, especially the mark-up of lines and bars, which will help navigating in the song more efficiently. See our next tutorials to learn more.
